What's the best VPN setup?

Hi sysadmins. My lab has finally decided to move our servers from a leaky basement to a proper CoLo facility. Unfortunately, the primary requirement of most people is that whatever we do to the servers remain transparent, IE they look like they're on the same subnet. Currently, we just have all the workstations and cluster machines all hooked up to the same 48-port ethernet switch. We intend to move all the cluster machines and (most importantly), the RAID machines over to the data center.

As far as I understand, in order to make two completely physically separated networks appear as if it were one contiguous network, the best solution would be a VPN tunnel. Is it possible to make just two server machines "bridge" the physical networks to view it as a seamless network, or would I have to have each workstations tunnel independently over to the cluster? Since all of our machines run Ubuntu, would OpenVPN be the best choice for this?
