Upgrade/Replace Windows Print Server

It's time for me to replace (by upgrading) our Windows Server 2003 print server (let's call it "printserver") with a Windows Server 2008R2 print server. Using the wonders of VMware, I have a new VM called "newprintserver" and I've created all the necessary print queues from scratch, complete with x86 and x64 drivers (I didn't want to bother migrating since I wasn't the admin who set up the original print server).

This is all going pretty well, but my question is: Will I be able to shut down "printserver," rename "newprintserver" to "printserver" and have my client machines (~1400) print properly? I think the underlying question is do XP clients connect to shared printers via DNS/NetBIOS or via some other method. I have found little documentation on this.

Thanks for any help, tips, etc.!
