I'm not a proper sysadmin or DBA, but I take care of my company's servers running a couple dozen VMs. When our database IO was embarrassing, I convinced my boss to let me trial Intel SLC SSDs instead of a Fiber-channel HDD RAID, and found the solution to work like a champ at a very affordable cost.
I see scalability issues with websites like reddit, and have to wonder if the spinning media is to blame? Is it the cost of vetting the new storage tech? Are they somehow incompatible with RAID?
