I've decided to take a new job (yay!) which means I will be leaving my current position. I've already decided that I'll give my notice this coming Monday and then be gone after two weeks. My situation is a bit complicated so I'd like some insight on how you all would handle this.
Here's my situation: I work for a small IT consulting business. I am one of three people who make up the entire company. My boss (owner), me (VP of sorts) and one new guy who just does grunt work and really isn't a tech. So, basically my boss and I are the "IT guys".
I have worked with this company for a little over 10 years so I know all the ins and outs and all of the clients. I do most of the difficult work (server migrations, email servers, virtualization, etc). My boss has, for lack of a better word, turned into the company salesman but still does some of the more rudimentary tech work. His skill level just hasn't kept up for the more complex projects.
When I leave, the company will take a MASSIVE cash flow hit. I've accepted this as "not my problem" since my boss decided to build the business on my shoulders so he could afford a more luxurious lifestyle rather than hire more people.
Last time (roughly a year ago) I nearly left for another position, but it didn't work out. At the time, my boss complained that two weeks was insufficient and I was somehow obligated to give at least 6 months notice before leaving. I don't buy that.
So, if you were in my position, what would you do? Is leaving after 2 weeks still okay?
TL;DR Worked at company for 10 years. When I leave, company is screwed big time, if not forced to close doors. Giving 2 weeks notice on Monday with no replacement for me. OK thing to do?
Additional Info:
- On paper I work for the company as a 1099 contractor
- No agreements / contracts which outline quitting procedures
- Personal Opinion: Boss is a raging douchebag
