Nothing like an outage during a change

$

So I am going to start this by saying I do not like to nor do I generally agree with changes during the business day, for this one I pushed as much as I felt comfortable with against mgmt to let me do it off hours. It was politely rejected and I was told to do it during lunch time after sending out a notice. I agreed after making my point about potential extended downtime and made sure they understood.

We have Exch2013 on a 2k8 server (previous IT) which is being replaced by a Exch2016/Server2016 VM that I stood up recently, moved over all of the objects to 2016 so just mailflow/transport is left to move. I was told to make those changes at lunch (I know...), since we have Reflexion handling spam anything not delivered should be queued up on their end. All my change entails is a few firewall objects and some testing. Well I make my changes and double check it all, then I try mailflow tests from gmail and a few others both inbound and out. NOTHING EXTERNAL WORKS! After a little troubleshooting I find the messages in the Reflexion portal in an error state listed SMTP errors. I assume it's my change and after confirming all is what I planned I decided to fall back as my window was shrinking. I roll it back and nothing, same issue. Internal mail is fine but external in/out is not. I then tried to call Reflexion support to no avail, open a web case, and then tried chat. I got lucky with chat and was given this lovely link... My change started @ 12:30p EST, about 2 hours into their issue that we had no notice on.

At the end of the day I feel it's my fault for not knowing they had an outage, I should have checked before my change but since we never had an outage with them it never occurred to be until part way into troubleshooting. Just had to vent to someone who could understand...

Smaller companies making their IT department literally the everything department

$

I have some thoughts on the rapid change I’ve seen in 5 years working at a company with less than 200 employees.

Literally every hot trend in business has become the IT department’s job.

We now develop BI and data solutions for the managers. We now are developing SharePoint collaboration sites. Hell we even do more accounting than accounting does now since we actually understand the ERP and the database the managers now want all sorts of reports from it.

My days have been filled with projects that have just fallen to a team of 3 IT guys with no experience in what we are being called to do. So we are literally “googling” “YouTubing” our way to all these new job functions.

Has anyone else become the business analyst/sharepoint dev/database admin/accounting process improvement specialist of the company recently just because you are the guy smart enough to figuring it out without adding more overhead to the company?

Pet Sitter phishing emails

WTH is going on!! we've been hammered this week with compromised accounts spamming everyone in the organization with Pet Sitter emails. Seems similar to the care.com hoax a while back, asking to email an address from your 'personal' email address to arrange for a payment.

It seems like a username / password dump with the number of compromised accounts thus far and no failed logon attempts in months, but i'm not sure how to begin to find that sort of info.

Does anyone have any info they can share to help us mitigate the issue?

Good Remote Desktop Sharing Alternative to TeamViewer?

It would appear that Teamviewer has a seasoned group of haters on here, and my experience would confirm why.

As of now, what are some good free remote desktop sharing apps as an alternative?

Administrator laptop - hyper-v

Do you guys use the Default Switch or configure a wired and wireless switch in Hyper-V (Windows 10) and pass to each VM as two networks?

This question is for those who use their host OS as Tier 0 and VM’s as Tier 1, 2, and desktop that use Microsoft Privileged Access Workstations.

Part of CIS benchmark is to disable internet connection sharing which prohibits the use of Default Switch (internal/NAT).

Just wondering what you folks are doing out there...

help jogging my memory

a few years ago, i remember there were a few different solutions that were hypervisor management front-ends that were agnostic about the back end.

do these still exist?

i'm moving into a SRE role with a company that is primarily cloud, but want to keep up my vmware, etc, while using other solutions (aws, azure, powervm or kvm on power, etc) on my own systems, which include some power IBM servers, x86 servers, and other.

i can't remember what they were called. one was, i think, from redhat, and the bleeding edge version was FOSS, but it wasn't the only one.

anyone remember what i'm talking about?

SolarWinds Passportal Personal Vaults Viewable by Everyone

All personal vaults for your company were viewable today in global search. Passportal has since corrected the issue but all passwords were viewable for most of the day. You are able to see if anyone else viewed your password so I recommend checking if you have any passwords in your personal vault.

Slow startup (timeout of NETLOGON) - gpsvc.log - offsite cold startup

$

Before I get people mad about the slow startup .. it is under a minute so no like other posts >5min - but is is stuck with a timeout for nothing so that is slow IMHO.

We have notebooks with roaming profiles etc. The problem is that when i am outside the company network and do a cold boot it is stuck for about 20 seconds at "Applying computer settings". When is disable the NLAsvc it boots right up.
The gpsvg.log shows that is just waiting for a timeout but I don't understand why?!
Shouldn't it ping the NETLOGON and immediately skip as its not reachable? The delay is before I logon (before the password prompt is visible).

Here is an excerpt from the gpsvc.log

It is not possible to make things bold in "code" (pretty sure I saw this but dont know how the did it) anyway, I've marked the relevant lines with " ** " at the beginning.

CGPMachineStartupConnectivity::CalculateWaitTimeoutFromHistory: Average is 4096.

This was actually 9153 (I've tried to reduce in the registry).

CGPMachineStartupConnectivity::CalculateWaitTimeoutFromHistory: Taking min of 8192 and 30000.

This is the "average" x2. So before log it was 9153 x2 = 20 seconds. I am sure there are computers with a higher value in the company as this gets calculated by the computer somehow.

Any ideas?

Working & Studying as Systems Administrator

$

Hi,

I've been working as a System Administrator for over 18 months now, with a medium-sized business that spans accross the state of Victoria (Australia). The company I work for originally hired me for something completely unrelated to IT - I was a traffic controller initially. Then, one day, my boss approached me and said he had been through my resume and discovered that I had completed several high school certificates in ICT, IPT and software design.

He asked if I would be interested in becoming the companies "IT Guy", and preferred to hire someone who he knew personally and who had a good reputation with the company and its clients. I gracefully accepted, and here I am - 18 months later - in a fully fledged, full time, System Admin role.

The catch is, apart from my high school certificates, I have absolutely no formal training in anything further than a Certificate IV in Information Technology. To be honest, most of my knowledge up until now was gained either through personal interest in computing, or by learning things on the go. So far, my abilities have kept me afloat in this job, but the company is rapidly expanding, as are the systems that hold the company together.

So, I approached the company director and made an offer - if they pay for my college course fees, they get to choose which course I enrol in - so that it not only benefits the company, but also builds my skill set. So, I have started with a Certificate IV in Computer Systems Technology, which seems to cover (on a very basic level) almost all of the tasks I am currently undertaking at work.

The reason I am posting this is because I have been following /r/sysadmin for some time now, and have found the subreddit really helpful. That being said, I would really appreciate it if some of you could provide me with some advice on some questions which I have:

  1. Resource & References - I'd like to build up a good collection of literature (online or books) which you would deem as a must-have, not just for study as a student, but down the line when I am further in my career.
  2. General "do's and don'ts" of an IT professional / system administrator
  3. Methods which helped you study
  4. Things that you wished you had known either while being a student, or when you first started in the industry.

I know this is a lot to read, and I'm sure hundreds of others have probably asked the same questions. But in this case, I feel that my situation is a little bit different than normal.

Looking forward to hearing from you all, and thanks in advance.

What (Bash) Scripts do you Use Most Often/What Use Cases are Most Important and Common for a Linux Admin?

I started bash a few weeks ago and need inspiration for new projects/"problems" to solve.

So far I've made a hang man clone, a program which combines text files into single big text files/separates them back again, one which backs things up with dates and reorganizes folders. I'd like to do some normal "applied" ones. But when reading e.g. the advanced bash scripting guide or reading code uploaded, I can't figure out the actual purpose of most scripts/ why someone would want to do these things, so I'm especially asking about use cases.

Sort of crossposted from: https://www.reddit.com/r/bash/comments/ck4v1h/what_scripts_do_you_use_most_oftenwhat_use_cases/

O365 ProPlus (Sub) and Visio 2019 CTR (Open License)

Anyone successfully get this to work in tandem? Since there is no longer an MSI for Visio, I have to install as part of click-to-run with an open license we purchased.

I've tried the following code to no avail (CTR starts and then stops immediately, obviously an issue of some kind)

<Configuration>

<Add SourcePath="\\\\server\\share" OfficeClientEdition=32" Channel="PerpetualVL2019">

<Product ID="VisioPro2019Volume">

<Language ID="en-us" />

</Product>

</Add>

<Updates Enabled="TRUE" UpdatePath="\\\\server\\\\share" />

<Display Level="None" AcceptEULA="TRUE" />

<Property Name="AUTOACTIVATE" Value="1" />

</Configuration>

Is this even possible? I thought I saw the documentation from Msoft saying that it was.

What is your company's policy on retired assets?

$

When equipment "fails" or is aged out and thrown away, what policies do most companies have?

Recently, the company has been throwing away (setting for recycle) a bunch of equipment that has been under warranty and repairable/replaceable, or simply not properly troubleshooting and testing.

Just in the past month, there have been 3 computers that were 2 years and and 10-11 months into their 3 year warranty that were stripped and tossed, but were barebones anyway, so I was able to rescue them and put them through RMA. SSDs that were tossed but passed all diagnostics, but "wasn't bootable". It was formatted in MBR and tested on a UEFI system, so didn't work when they tried to boot off of it. I was able to figure it out and verify it worked properly in minutes. And in just the past 24 hours, two noise-cancelling headsets that retailed for $250 a piece were thrown away because of microphone issues, but after a firmware update and ACTUAL testing, do not experience the crackling or electronic noises complained about that is typically an issue with Bluetooth being Bluetooth or software.

It's aggravating that the company isn't being wasteful, but a lot of the summer help (college interns) that's supposed to be doing the easy jobs like "testing returned equipment" is doing a piss-poor job. I've recovered probably $3000 worth of equipment that wasn't actually bad, just a victim of laziness.

I'm very close to trying to implement something where equipment that gets tossed has to be checked by two people. I mean, some things like "keyboard key sticks", no big deal, but I don't know...I can see the argument that it's not worth the cost to go that in depth, but on the other hand, 6 computers, 2 headsets, 2 SSDs...it adds up.

Hey Reddit, we are the team working on making VMware sysadmins proactive heroes, AMA!

On Wednesday 7/31, from 9am PT - Noon PT, the VMware Skyline team is here to talk to the r/sysadmin community about common VMware problems you run into, from trivial to critical.

Fighting fires on a daily basis can seem like a normal part of the job, but it doesn't have to be. Support models are transitioning from reactive troubleshooting as problems arise, to proactive issue avoidance. The goal is to give you more time to focus on innovation vs. troubleshooting issues.

What are some top issues you face regularly, that you want to see proactive, or even automated resolutions for? What questions and/or tips do you have in regards to solving problems before they happen? How can we help make you a proactive IT hero?

Acceptance Testing

Hello everyone,

I'm not sure if "Acceptance Testint" is the right word since I've Google translated it but : I've just finished one of my very first major project, total change of a LAN/ WLAN infrastructure in our new HQ.

I'd like to provide a document to testify that all wished functions have been properly installed and are functioning correctly. Do you guys have a template for this kind of document ? What would you put ? I thought : List of functions with proof of functioning (ping, authentification, etc, config file, photos...) Detailed visio schema

Any advice ? Thanks !

OpenSource/Free Linux software to create a "map/picture" of the infrastructure?

Hey guys,

I wanted to ask you, if anyone knows a good way to display the current state of the infrastructure in a picture or a map.

To be more precise, I'm trying to give you an example:

ServerA: Has DHCP, DNS and NTP Server running.

ServerB: Has Icinga running. Information for Icinga get pulled from ServerA's DNS service

ServerC: Has foo-monitoring running and also depends on ServerA's DNS information

ServerD: Standalone

Furthermore, I would like to specify more information on ServerA, for example, how DNS is created (which files were used) and also for which network we serve DHCP.

I know this is most likely too much for a single software, but displaying some connections between servers would be a starter which I could complement with text to be more specific.

The software should be opensource or atleast free to use on a linux client.

Thanks in advance, any advice is appreciated.

If I upgrade from Shadowprotect 5.x to SPX 6.x will the continous incremental jobs carry on, or will a new chain be created?

Also, does anyone know what the recommended version of SPX is ? I had a feeling a couple back from the latest, but I can't honestly recall from one of the webinars recently.

Protecting the network at logon ?

So here is the age old problem which still exists on windows 10 it seems

I'm a network admin at a school, students (delights) pull the network cable mid way through login and as a result gpo's are not applied - this means they have access to a number of items that we otherwise lock down.

We use to have a script that would protect against this but it seems that this doesn't work on 10, has anyone here ever experienced these issues? have you tried this yourself as a networker to see if it allows to much access on your own kit ?

Do you have any solutions that could overcome this issue?

I'd be interested to know
