Hi guys, i have to install SNMP on some incredibly crappy legacy SP3 XP boxes with no network drive access and under the eye of a customer. Does anyone know a place i can download just the feature files for SNMP for xp without messing around with mounting ISOs or moving stuff around on networks, i can host it on ftp if someone can point me to the files.

Thanks so much

Should my role title by a SysAdmin or something else?

Hi, I have started my first job 4 months ago but my title hasn't been finalised yet. They have asked me to do my research or speak to senior system administrators and let us know what I would want as my title and they will review it. This is not a huge company and they don't really care about titles too much,

I am responsible for quite different kind of duties, these duties involve.

  • Configuration management using Puppet for which I write code for new applications or OS deployment everyday, sometime from scratch.
  • Using Jenkins on daily basis for continuous integration.
  • Using GIT on daily basis to push configuration to developer environment, and eventually to the production.
  • Using logstash/elasticsearch/Kibana for logging and monitoring, write custom filters for logstash to filter various kind of logs, forward them to either Elasticsearch or InfluxDB or any other output plugin.
  • InfluxDB for Time Series database and monitoring.
  • Nexus for Repository management.
  • Managing nginx based webservers and apache (multiple)
  • Vagrant for a local environment setup.
  • Writing custom python scripts to automate tasks.
  • monitoring and management of over 200 in-house servers and network devices.
  • using Red Hat Virtualization for managing 100s of virtual machines (both linux and windows).
  • Installing and managing new network devices.
  • Installing and providing support to Software developers, managing their backups, handling licencing of various software etc.
  • Tools used for monitoring, Sensu, Nagios, Grafana (for time series data).
  • Right now, I am automating metrics collection from over 200 servers and implementing alerting after that, virtual-machines etc using sensu and puppet which is my biggest project as of yet.

I have setup quite a lot from it from scratch, and have to learn a new tool almost every week which I really enjoy. Most of my tasks include automation and monitoring so far. There is a lot more which I haven't been exposed to since it related to security and stuff.

My question is, am I really a SysAdmin?

Someone who is a bit experience in SysAdmin role at other company had suggested me that this sounds like a Site-reliability engineer duties, but i am not sure,

Can someone please help.

Hyper-V - IP address for domain controller

$

Hi,

I'm setting up a lab using HYPER-V for the first time after using VmWare Workstation in the past.

For my domain controller, I want to assign it a static IP (e.g. 10.0.0.100 which is completely different from all IP addresses used by my HYPER-V host) and I also want the DC to be able to access the internet through the host.

How do I assign this IP to the DC? In VmWare Workstation I'd just set up NAT and then assign IP addresses as appropriate from within the DC after.

Thanks!

Firmware for old checkpoint appliance

Hi,

I have an old Checkpoint sbxn-100-1 UTM-1 Edge N appliance.

I want to update the firmware to the latest version...but checkpoint asks me to activate a subscription with them.

It makes absolutely no sense to activate a subscription for such an old device

Is it possible to find the firmware from some alternative site? The latest version is 8.2.77n

Thanks!

I need to implement a serial key as part of a regular MSI installation, but don't know how

Hey guys,

So we have this program called WinForms Suite by Janus.

Their support doesn't exist, and the forums are dead, so I figured I'll try to get some help from you guys.

When I type Winforms.exe /? I get all the switches I need. The quiet installation is there and even the /extract which gives me the msi file I can run in SCCM.

The thing is, we have a serial key which is required during the installation of the program. People need to enter in manually and I find it kinda stupid so I would like to simply create a package/application in SCCM to deploy this with the key already in it.

I had programs in the past that also required a serial number during the installation, so their trick was to put the .msi file in the same folder with SN.txt (this file had the serial key). This would automatically add the key during the installation which is cool. I don't think this is the case with Janus WinForms Suite.

I would like to know if there is a way for me to pinpoint exactly when it asks for a key during the installation, and somehow automate the serial implementation.

Thanks

Server 2016 and Cumulative Updates failing

$

Are any of you guys experiencing issues with Server 2016 and Windows Update/WSUS? None of our 2016 servers are able to install the monthly cumulative updates and we're currently resigned to either deploying the updates through PDQ Deploy, or manually running sconfig on the server and updating from there. We've been having this problem for months now.

When updating through the regular Windows Update, the progress bar rarely moves beyond 1% and it eventually gives the error 0x800705b4 (https://i.imgur.com/xWbINTX.png)

I've tried deleting C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and making sure there's plenty of disk space on the server. I'm already running AdamJ's Clean-WSUS script.

Our 2012 R2 servers are not experiencing any issues at all. I've found some other people having the same issues, but no actual solutions.

Is there a command/tool like "Tracert for ports"?

I can tracert to an external destination without any issues, but it fails on port 587. I've been monitoring the firewall logs and it doesn't seem to get that far.

I'm looking for something that will show me the hops on port 587 so I can see where it stops. Does such a thing exist?

DNS help

$

We made some changes on two of our clients servers to ensure that if the server were down that the clients could still get to the internet.

After this change was made ( Putting 8.8.8.8 as the secondary DNS server ) we had several computers and VPN users not able to access the server or get out on the internet.

We then took off the secondary DNS configuration, fast forward a couple of weeks we've had two computers within a week of each other having the symptoms and it seems it was a DNS issue - as taking them off the domain and putting them back on was resolving the issue.

Having looked at other computers on the domain(s) I can still see that other computers are picking up the 8.8.8.8 address for secondary DNS but I cannot understand how/why?

Are DNS settings stored somewhere on a computer so it doesn't need to keep asking the DC for an update, if so. Can we flush them out of the configuration.

Yes I have done a DNS flush. To no help.

hello guys,

we have an idea to setup mini tablet displays instead of meeting room nameplates. we have 9 meeting rooms for now.

would appreciate any advice on what kind of setup you run for having mini tablet displays available for meeting rooms in an organization.

technical models of the tablets (PoE powered, most likely) and software you're using + feedback.

https://www.meetingroom365.com - is one vendor that we were considering.

Active Directory Tips for a Linux SysAd?

$
0
0

I've been a Linux Sysadmin for over 10 years, and I haven't really touched Windows since Windows XP some how.

Recently, I started a new job at a small company. While the majority of the environment is Linux, which I'm 100% happy with looking after, as it's a small company (10 people in the UK office, and maybe 10-20 in various parts of the world), we don't have anyone dedicated to "windows support", so that responsibility falls on me.

So far, I have been spending more time than I would like dealing with issues with Windows, rather than doing my actual job on the Linux side.

I would much rather the company gets someone to take over the Windows stuff as I have no particular interest in Windows at all, but as that's not going to happen any time soon, and a it's making my job a pain, I'm trying to learn a bit more about Windows to make my life a bit easier.

The guy before me setup a Synology box as a domain controller for the Windows machines, but not so intelligently set the domain to a domain which we do not own, and is currently owned by some other company.

This naturally, has been causing a lot of issues already, and on top of that, I don't think the AD implementation (which I guess is using Samba) on the Synology box is that great or stable.

I'd like to migrate from the Synology box to a real Windows DC. Is this possible without starting from scratch? I figured it might be possible if I just add the Windows server to the domain, and follow the various migration steps you would perform as if you were moving AD from one Windows server, to another?

I was thinking to first migrate to a real Windows server, then rename the domain?

Or would it be more sensible to just start from scratch?

I've downloaded Windows Server 2016 evaluation, and setup two VMs as a domain controller in my home lab so I can learn a bit more before I do anything. Are there any tips or things you would immediately do on a fresh AD installation that may not be obvious to a beginner that I can add to my notes?

Hi guys,

I'm already pulling my hairs of my head.

Device Name : WIS-Q5300

Software Version : 1.0.0338.20161115_Release

BusyBox v1.15.3

I have 2 same devices witch basically i want to use to make Wifi-bridge between 2 places.

One device after configuration can ping working subnet 192.168.x.x and 10.2.x.x

the other one in the other hand can ping 192.168 but not the 10.2.

i tried reinstalling firmware, factory reset, adding route, iptables are flushed, importing config from one device to another.

NOTHING helps, what the fuck, what the hell i am missing.

Resources for transitioning to SysAdmin?

$

I will be completing my math phd in less then a year time.

During this time I've learned quite a bit about programming and linux administration taking care for my own private server and my home machine.

I am a little more than a linux fan boy at the moment. Basically I can do (bad) bash and (bad) git, with some sprinkle of knowledge in other domains. What are good resources to transition to a more serious path? What are the core skills I should pick up? Should I look for some training (pay courses or certification) or is it a bettar idea to find an internship instead?

Internal Communications - is email simply the most effective

$
0
0

Hello.

I have pondered this for a while - I don't really know why but I am hoping to be persuaded otherwise.

Several years ago now it felt like there was a rebellion from industry management against email. Essentially moving away from using email so heavily and opting instead for communications tools like those found in office 365. Skype/teams for instant messaging, SharePoint for intranet and yammer etc etc.

However, my experience tells me that only email is actively opened and regularly monitored by the majority of staff. If staff have to go looking for it (intranets, yammer, skype etc) it will be more likely they will not engage with company published information. No matter how much encouragement is pushed out by whatever manner, an email will receive a greater audience than the same piece of content pushed out to the intranet or yammer etc etc.

Email also acts as a relatively decent filing system that people can go back and find useful information from going back years - I don't know what else would enable that.

Does anyone else view things that way. Does anyone work anywhere that have adopted a more engaging platform than email that will handle both person to person communications but also company to person/group communications?

I guess I'm looking to spark a discussion. I'm curious what your opinions and experiences are.

Upgrade neglected network or burn and rebuild?

So, I've been tasked with trying to resuscitate a network which has been the victim of neglect for 10 years.

Its running off a single Windows Small Business Server 2003 DC with its integrated Sharepoint, remote access and Exchange. A mix of Windows 7 domain joined PCs and Windows 10 BYOCs.

Do you believe its wiser to burn the domain and start fresh, or attempt to upgrade and swap in a new box with 2016 Essentials?

They're a very small business, with 5 machines and about 10 users.

I am looking into setting up a password web portal for users to change their AD passwords. I set up Passcore and it works well but didn't have any logging or reporting. I searched this sub for recommendations and came up with this list. Can you comment on any of these? Have you used them? Are any of them a definite no? Are any of them awesome? I have read some good reviews of Adaxes.

Server infected with malware

We recently had a server infected with Arrow malware. The old IT staff really didn't know what they were doing and put our VPN and FTP server in the same VM....yeah, we know...we are in the process of redoing our entire infrastructure. They were also able to gain access to one of our RDS servers and install coin mining software.

We have removed the malware and secured the servers but when we were picking through files we found a vmgcoininstall.txt file. What is this? Any tips or trick for making sure things are clean? We have already done the usual clean and password roll.

Thank you!
