We have twenty branch offices across the state, and each branch office has about 5-15 users. Our users currently save everything to their desktops, and we're wanting to move away from local storage to more centralized storage. While each branch office is connected to our main office via VPN, we'd like to put a central file server at each branch to decrease overhead among the VPN connections. We are also on a Server 2008 domain and our workstations are a mixture of Windows XP and 7.
Since we did not budget for this, we'd like to keep this as inexpensive as possible without sacrificing quality and security. We've been eyeballing the Buffalo TeraStations since they support AD authentication. I've read some comments here previously that people hated them and that they were extremely vulnerable. Are there any truthful claims to this? What about Netgear's ReadyNAS series? As much as I like OSS, I'd like to stay away from FreeNAS (and other free alternatives) because we would like something that is under warranty and can be supported.
What are you honest opinions of Buffalo's storage appliances? Is anybody using these at their work place? Do you have any other recommendations? Thanks!
