Since usually more backups is better, I have several hard drives on several machines backing up the same important data. These backups are done via rsync on Ubuntu servers and I check them manually something like tri-yearly.
Obviously, one bad thing that can happen is that these barely verified hard drives quietly fail. Right now, I have a SMART daemon do weekly tests and on the drives and send email if stuff fails. I'm also looking into having rsync send email when copy fails.
Besides this, am I missing anything ? I know, I should probably check manually weekly also but I'm lazy and I'd rather not have become a better person with a stronger will.
