I'm looking to create a lab for students based entirely on tablets, and am meeting resistance from some staff and the curriculum directors. The biggest concern for them is that students will not learn anything as far as keyboarding skills. My concern is that mobile computing is without-a-doubt what the majority of these students will be using by the time they graduate (most of them already are), and we are going to be left behind focusing on things like keyboarding.
My opinion is that keyboarding is not as important as it might have been several years ago. Computing is changing and onscreen keyboards are going to be what these kids will likely deal with by the time they graduate high-school.
Am I wrong about keyboard skills? Should this be an important skill for ALL kids to learn? Am I being too much of a futurist and need to come back to 2011?
