I work in the IT department at a large ski resort. One of our patrol offices needs a local file server for some of the work they do. They pass a large amount of data we do not want on our backbone. We bought a Buffalo NAS and have found the thing is insecure and does not behave well on the domain (even though they promised it did... lots of furious people on the web are in the same boat it seems). There is no way I will get a Windows Server license for this location. My idea is to pull the two 1TB hard drives out of the Buffalo and setup Ubuntu on an older machine. Then, add it to the domain and setup shares.
I see a few ways of doing this. The best looking one, so far, is with LikewiseOpen. Another is to install the PAM module.
I have a fair amount of experience working with Ubuntu, but it was it college a few years back. I am rusty and needing some help.
Has anyone done something like this? What are your suggestions?
