I've been fighting Java for the past week or so. Normally we deploy java via GPO Software Installation. It has worked pretty well for us, but on about 5% of our machines (not an insignificant number), the installer fails. So far our only hope has been to go run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility manually and remove the remnants of the previous version.
How do medium to large enterprise shops keep Java current?
As a sidebar/rant, it's extremely frustrating that the Java support articles for these problems either direct people to email java-deployment-feedback@oracle.com (which bounces!) and/or download the Windows Installer Cleanup Util from MS - which MS doesn't even provide anymore! For a software package that is used on practically every internet connected device, I'd expect a much better product & support.
