A crash course in DNS

So, between working 50 hours a week [spent 20 in a datacenter Saturday] and finishing my degree at about 15 - 20 school hours a week, I'm working on this "learning to learn" platform I have created. The basis was an ESXi server that was good enough to load up a few VMs and start making mistakes. Thanks to MSDNAA, I have licenses for some really neat things such as Server 2008 R2.

This brings me to my next project - a basic AD domain controller. I am a newb at a web hosting company and one of the first things I've learned is that even though I am pretty well versed in *nix, there are tons and tons of things I don't know regarding webhosting and thus, the Internet. One of these things is DNS. I understand DNS servers, roots, etc. I don't understand DNS zones and how it all comes down with a domain controller. SO, what I wanted to see is if anyone here has a good resource that's a crash course on domains and domain controllers. I would love to get my MCITP EA one of these days, but right now I don't have the cash for the training.

Alternatively, would someone be kind enough to explain to me DNS in the scope of my domain controller. This is a simple, single homed, AD server with Domain Services and a DNS server installed. DNS is already pointing to itself. dcpromo has been run, but I don't know if I set it up correctly. What should be the FQDN? My provider is comcast, so comcast's suffix is comcast.net. Should my FQDN be mynetwork.comcast.net? I'm trying to get this all set up before I start having my workstations and FreeNAS authenticate through the AD Server. I'm also a bit confused on forward and reverse lookup zones. Is the forward lookup the DNS server up the chain? Example: Comcast nameservers are 68.86.68.166 and 68.86.74.166. Would this be the forward lookup zone?

I seriously appreciate any pointers, links to information, and explanations.
