Basic question but something I haven't really found an answer to on technet and through various searches.
My work network is not on a domain, but has enough systems to warrant WSUS to help with bandwidth issues on Patch Tuesday. The kink in the puzzle is that we operate in two different locations. Half of my users spend 6 months in one location, 6 months in another, while the other half of the users remain in one location for the entire year. Logic tells me 2 WSUS servers should handle the load, but my issue comes in selecting which server the user pulls updates.
Does WSUS have some sort of function to re-direct users on the fly? I'd like to not have to manually edit local GPO's each time a user moves, but rather some sort of system that say looks at the user's IP address or some such to recognize which WSUS server to contact and work from there. Initial suggestion is to write a powershell script to do the lookup locally on the machine and overwrite the registry settings to apply the policy. Has anyone else run into a problem similar to this, and utilized something easier to make this work? Installing a Domain so I can push group policies is out of the question at the moment as much as I'd like to.
