Damaged components from thunderstorm. Any idea on how this could have happened?

So we got a call from one of our customers this morning that the network is down after a crazy Thunder/Lightning/Hail storm last night. We get to the location and realize that their switch, router, and cable modem isn't working. Luckily the components are very basic, and therefore cheap to replace.

The switch is a Netgear JGS524 v2, when It has power going to it the fans begin to spin, but no lights come on to signify power.

The router is a Netgear RP614, when plugged in, the power light comes on, but no link lights or anything else.

And the cable modem would not power up at all.

It looks as if all 3 were damaged from the storm.

We had all 3 of the devices plugged into an APC Back-UPS 650 in the battery backup ports on the UPS.

Has anybody seen something like this happen before? If so, how can we prevent this from happening in the future?
