Managing Linux Desktops

I have about 15 Linux desktops around my mostly Microsoft office. These desktops are on an NIS domain, and while they work OK, the management of usernames and computers is god awful in NIS. It's clear that NIS is old and busted. I need a solution for managing my linux desktops, centralizing logins/passwords/configurations, etc. So that fixing issues and adding users and computers is no longer such a gigantic project.

Anybody have any tips about where to get started? I'm looking at Puppet and Likewise-Open and I really like them, but I'm not sure I see a pathway out of our current situation and into a smoother ! I'm open to ideas right now. Anybody have any experience with migrating from NIS? Thanks!
