I'm currently in my junior year of college, going for a degree in Management Information Systems (Soon to be just IS, if I can get my school to accept my customized degree), looking for a future career in IS. I want to start getting some practical experience using my own equipment, and am looking for some suggestions as to what exactly I can do with what I have to learn. Here's what I have to work with:
Locations:
1 dorm room with crappy campus connection, with all outgoing connections (besides 80) blocked.
1 home with a decent connection (10down/2up)
1 Dad's business with an iffy connection (5down/384kbps up)
Equipment:
- Total control: 3 laptops, 3 desktops (some needing parts/are slow)
- Dad's business's computers: 4 workstations, all with mission critical data (can't mess with completely)
I have Teamviewer (cross platform semi-firewall proof remote desktop) installed on all the machines, and have about 6 years of linux desktop experience, as well as a year of helpdesk experience.
I have tried to contact my campus' network operations department, to see if I could do something unpaid with them, but they're completely closed off to anything of the sort, so i'm somewhat forced to work on my own.
I'm thinking I would like to specialize in Linux, but i'm sure going cross-platform would be best.
If anyone could help me with my little learning project, it would be greatly appreciated.
