I'm a Linux beginner, but I want to best secure the data and speed up the network of my small department at a University. What are the top five things I should do or implement?

I've slowly learned more and more about Linux (Ubuntu in particular) over the past couple years and last month switched my Workstation to Ubuntu. I mostly do Web stuff in addition to Social Media and Marketing but I want to better secure and provide utility for my team.

Nearly all of our computers are Windows machines and use our umbrella department's domain running Windows Server 2003 I believe. Most of our work is done online through the browser via Google Apps.

We do have our original Windows Server 2003 which is currently the back end of an event management system (just SQL Server), and runs Virtual Box which has an Ubuntu VM I have setup running Teambox (which can be used for other Linux tools/projects).

Some things that I've thought of since DNS and other stuff is still under my control.

  • Setting up a Squid proxy server to speed up perceived Internet browsing (Not sure?).
  • Using SSH is some way to make sure our combined access to the internet is secure (Not sure?)
  • Network monitoring to ensure none of the machines are compromised or being attacked.
  • Switching Windows Server for Ubutu Server and then VMing Windows Server instead (or just Win XP for the SQL Server if possible) , server is probably about 4 - 5 years old with older Xeons, only 1gb of ram, and I think two pairs of HDDs in Raid-1

I've just discovered the awesome Sysadminpedia and am currently going through it and seeing what I can learn but I wanted to ask the community and see if you guys had any ideas or things that came to mind.
